Interesting stuff from around the Internet

internet-300pxBeen a crazy busy month personally, lost one family member, added a new one, celebrated some stuff, and Halloween was here. I’ve been looking into a variety of information on the web so here is a round up of some interesting topics until I have some time to devote to normal articles and tutorials.

RethinkDB – this newer Big Data database platform seems to be getting some traction. Its aimed at realtime web applications, and uses a JSON type data structure (similar to MongoDB), but also provides support for JOINs (which MongoDB doesn’t). PacktPub’s blog posted an article on Learning RethinkDB. The documentation on the platform’s website is very good compared to what is normally associated with Open Source projects. Photoshop World Vegas – Photowalk

Update 9/19/09 10:13PM EST

Scroll down for more information about the late Photowalk at Photoshop World – Vegas

For another Photowalk opportunity Terry Reinert will be leading a walk on Wednesday afternoon starting at 4:00 PM. Check his website here for more details.

Fotolia is also planing a couple of photowalks on Thursday and Friday evenings from 9PM until 11PM. More information can be found on their blog site here.

Late Walk Information:

Bring your walking shoes! We will be meeting at the Tram station on the Casino level of the Mandalay Bay, near the House of Blues at 12:15AM after Midnight Madness on Friday evening/Saturday morning. If you are under eighteen, you must have a parent or legal guardian with you.

This will be a whirlwind walk of some of the most famous casinos in the world. We’ll be checking out the MGM Grand Lion, the Paris Casino’s Eiffel Tower and Arch de Triumphe, the Statue of Liberty and Brooklyn Bridge at New York, New York, and the Sphinx at the Luxor. We’ll also be seeing the soon to be completed City Center development, Planet Hollywood, and the Harley-Davidson cafe.

Tentative route:

  • Tram from Mandalay Bay to Excalibur.
  • Tropicana Casino
  • MGM Grand and the giant Lion statue.
  • Down LV Blvd, past Showcase Mall (M&M store, Giant Coke bottle and the Harley Davidson Cafe)
  • Planet Hollywood
  • Paris casino – Arch de Triumphe/Eiffel Tower and inside Casino there is a bridge that overlooks the casino floor (good vantage point for pics?)

Depending on time – continuing on to Flamingo. Bugsy’s memorial in the garden then hop on Tram back down to MGM.
Or if its getting past 2AM, just take the Tram from Paris back down to MGM.

  • New York, NY – Replica of Brooklyn Bridge and Statue of Libery.
  • Luxor – Sphinx and Pyramid

Background Info:

I’m organizing a Photowalk in Las Vegas during the Photoshop World conference in October. I led a very small one last year in Vegas, and led the Toledo, Ohio walk as part of Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photowalk in July and had a great time doing both. Melanie Alexander who lead the Vegas leg of the WWPW will be joining us as well. If you’re attending PSW and would like to come be a part of the walk, just follow me on Twitter (@edpflager), check back here periodically, or send an email to ‘me @’.

I didn’t want to conflict with anything that NAPP is organizing as part of PSW, so this walk will be on Friday night after Midnight Madness (technically Saturday morning). If you’ve never walked the Vegas strip at night, its an awesome spectacle. Make sure to bring your tripod or mono-pod. And here’s a picture I took last year as part of the impromptu late night photowalk.

If you plan your own walk, please let me know and I will post a link here as well. Thanks!
